The “bigger is better” trend among popular
celebrities when it comes to engagement rings is starting to trickle
down to us ordinary people.
For example more pink diamonds were sold in the six months just
after J. Lo received a large pink diamond from Ben Affleck than had
been sold in the six years prior to that.
Even though that engagement was called off and J. Lo has gone on to
receive another stunning ring, copies of that six carat pink diamond
ring continue to be one of the top sellers among many internet
jewelers. This is a big change from when Marilyn Monroe breathlessly
sang “Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend.” At that time almost no one
would have though of trying to imitate the jewels worn by her.
Many women these days, however, are looking to receive a ring that
is similar in quality and quantity to the three carat gemstones worn
by their favorite celebrities. Since many people look upon
celebrities as the arbitrators of style they look to the fingers of
such women as Madonna, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Ashley Judd for the
inspiration for their own engagement rings.
Many of the rings that are now being produced are replicas of
Zeta-Jones’ 10-carat marquise-cut diamond ring, Madonna's 3-stone
Edwardian-style ring and Ashley
Judd's antique pave-set diamond ring. These stars have also made a
difference the size of stone being purchased, as the three or four
carat diamond is quickly replacing the traditional one carat diamond
engagement ring.
The message that bigger is better came through loud and clear at
this year’s Oscars where more than $40 million worth of jewels came
down the red carpet. Most people forget the fact that most of these
jewels are borrowed and will be immediately returned to their vaults
after the program.
Our society has become increasingly fascinated and obsessed with “bling”.
This had made it difficult to measure how much should really be
spent on an engagement ring. The traditional notion is that it
should cost three months salary. This may be way too much for the
average guy to handle however.
It is important to look beyond all these cultural messages and
remember that your engagement ring is not a measure of your worth
but of the relationship between two people. You don’t need two
carats in order to share love and devotion for one another. |
