Giving the Gift of a Promise Ring

There are many reasons that a promise ring could be given, although for most people it is considered a pre-engagement ring or a promise of future marriage.

In truth a promise ring can be a sign of any form of commitment. Below we will discuss some of the common alternative reasons for giving a promise ring.

A Promise Among Friends
Often two friends will exchange promise rings as a sign of that friendship. Often this is the case if one of the friends is moving away or they will not see each other for an extending period of time. These rings are most popular among young girls who will often get them engraved with such sayings as “Best Friends 4Ever”. These rings are a great way to show how important this friendship really is to both people.

A Purity Ring
This is a ring worn as a reminder to be sexually chaste. While it is most often given by a parent to a child it can be exchanged as a gift between boyfriend and girlfriend. This ring implies that until marriage you will remain sexually pure. The ring serves to remind you of this promise.

A Substance Abstinence Promise
When people are recovering from an addition to alcohol or another substance they will sometimes wear a ring as a sign of this commitment. People will often purchase the ring for their own use, but it can also be a gift from a loving friend or family member who wants to encourage sobriety.

A Promise to Stay Away From Addiction
This ring can serve as a promise to remain free from addiction to drugs or other harmful items or behaviors, such as gambling or pornography. Some people see this type of ring as a commitment not to doing anything in excess, including video games and eating.

A Monogamy Promise
A couple may wear promise rings as a symbol of their love and commitment, even when they have decided not to have a civil marriage ceremony for whatever reason. The rings show their strong desire to stay committed as a couple and are usually full of meaning for the couple.

A Promise of Silence
A ring would often be worn as a commitment to silence in ancient times. When a particular secret needed to be kept the ring served as a constant reminder not to share it. Sometimes they rings had a curse engraved inside the band that was to take effect should the person break the promise of silence.

A Spiritual Commitment Promise
It was quite common for church leaders to wear a commitment ring as a promise to their religious commitment to the church in days past. The practice of wearing rings to show a religious or spiritual commitment continues even today.

As you can see there are a great variety of reasons why a promise ring might be worn: as a show of friendship between two people, a promise of purity, a promise of abstinence, a promise to remain clear of addition or excess in things or behaviors, a promise of monogamy, a promise to keep a secret, and a sign of a religious or spiritual commitment. Of course promise rings can be used for just about any promise or commitment not just those listed above. Promise rings can either symbolize a promise made to oneself or a promise made between two people. It serves as a physical symbol of a commitment.
